Increasing concerns on domestic child labour in India

Save the Children has been one of the most reputed NGOs worldwide since its establishment in 1919. It works tirelessly to protect and promote the rights of all vulnerable children. This NGO has greatly impacted the lives of over 10 million children in India since 2008.

Save the Children has a global presence established in over 80 countries around the world. It is one of the most trusted NGOs in India and runs various programs for the welfare of underprivileged children in 19 states. This NGO strives tirelessly to end domestic child labour in India. Save the Children carries out its multiple social outreach programs thanks to the support of its generous individual donors, corporate partners, and institutional supporters. This organization strives to provide underprivileged and impoverished children access to the education, nutrition, and healthcare they need in order to lead better lives.

It is a priority for the Government of India to end domestic child labour in India. According to the Census data of 2011, there are currently more than 82 lakh children employed as child laborers across India. Domestic child labour in India can be found in both urban and rural areas. 5 states in India are home to the majority of these child laborers, these states being - Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. Uttar Pradesh alone accounts for approximately 20% of India’s child laborers.

The matter of child labour is an alarming concern and therefore it is imperative that we find a way to eradicate domestic child labour in India. Child labour refers to the act of employing children below the age of 14. There is a serious need to end the practice of domestic child labour in India, as child labour greatly hampers the physical and mental development of children. It is the mission of NGOs like Save the Children to ensure that child labour is rooted out from society. These NGOs work dedicatedly to make domestic child labour in India both socially and culturally unacceptable. Save the Children has successfully rescued thousands of children from the clutches of child labour. It has proved to be instrumental in the rehabilitation of the children they’ve rescued.

Save the Children runs its operations to put an end to domestic child labour in India. Child labour has numerous detrimental effects on the physical, mental, emotional and social health of the children engaged in it.

Save the Children engages with communities, teachers, students and children in their efforts to end domestic child labour in India.
